Dana Carvey

HBO · 1995 · 60 min

Rapid presidential impressions, celebrity voices, and an acoustic guitar detour.

Carvey works the stage like an overtired mimic let loose in a rec room, turning bodily contortions into pitch-perfect vocal impressions before ducking behind an acoustic guitar. The material skips heavy cynicism in favor of elastic theatricality, pivoting from George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot into Cary Grant caught up in the Hugh Grant scandal.

Taped in San Francisco, the hour premiered on HBO in October 1995. Carvey was in an awkward post-Saturday Night Live transition. His mid-nineties film leads had failed to make him a movie star, and his audacious ABC sketch program was still months away from its short run. The stand-up stage gave him firmer footing, allowing him to lean directly into the physical mimicry and vocal agility that made his name.

Much of the set tracks the cultural wallpaper of late 1995, running through the O.J. Simpson murder trial and White House visits with the former president. He sits at the piano to belt out his nonsense ballad “Choppin’ Broccoli,” recounts smoking weed with Paul McCartney, and riffs repeatedly on the acronym of the cable network paying him.

Comedy Central acquired syndication rights the following year and kept the hour in heavy daytime rotation throughout the late 1990s.
