Crowd Tickler
Universal · 2015 · 60 min
Fast crowd work and breathless logic at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Dara Ó Briain speaks at a sprint, treating audience banter not as an excuse to demean people but as fuel for elaborate improvised premises. Early on, he interrogates front-row ticket holders about their jobs, then immediately cobbles their answers into a pitch for an unhinged Scandinavian television drama. The routine works because he follows every conversational detour to its logistical end.
Filmed at the Hammersmith Apollo in London during his 2015 tour, the performance caught him a decade into his run hosting Mock the Week, alongside regular presenting gigs on science programmes like Stargazing Live. Contemporary reviews noted his refusal to play into the romantic trope of the sad clown, pointing out a pragmatic persona that had no interest in feigning personal tragedy for stage pathos.
The scripted material tilts heavily toward aging and mundane public works.
He mounts a defense of turning forty on the grounds that he no longer has to pretend to finish every Martin Scorsese film, discovers classical music through a Lurpak butter advert, and invents a tragic inner life for a massive tunnel boring machine.
