A Delicate Man

Doogie Horner

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2016

Deadpan stand-up about everyday indignities and mild physical frailty.

Doogie Horner constructs jokes like an illustrator plotting technical drawings, presenting everyday indignities with mild-mannered logic. He frames himself as someone temperamentally ill-equipped for modern life, getting compliments on his glasses that turn out to be people asking for the Wi-Fi password, or injuring his back simply by sitting down.

Recorded in November 2015 at Helium Comedy Club in Philadelphia, the album caught Horner right around his move to Queens as a new family man. Before touring clubs full-time, he worked as an art director and designer for Quirk Books, and had become known nationally after winning over a hostile, booing crowd on America’s Got Talent.

The set leans into awkward domestic encounters, dollar pizza, and small hats before closing on an extended bit about eagles. His delivery is steady, quiet, and deliberate, treating bodily fragility as an inescapable daily condition.

Released in 2016 by Comedy Dynamics, the record earned a staff pick from The A.V. Club, which singled out its balance of deadpan understatement and off-kilter observation.
