Animal Cracker

Dwight Slade approaches middle age like a series of low-stakes ambushes, turning the mundane shock of mistaking the garbage disposal switch for the kitchen light into a miniature disaster movie. Filmed in 2017 for Dry Bar Comedy in Provo, Utah, the forty-minute set places the longtime Portland club headliner inside a strict clean-comedy framework that he treats purely as a structural exercise rather than a moral stance. Slade, who began writing jokes in Texas with Bill Hicks in the late 1970s before spending decades as an anchor of the Pacific Northwest stand-up scene, relies on physical tension and calculated pauses to sell premises about airport security panic, the oddities of Oregon, and the absurdity of humans cowering before harmless insects while ignoring actual apex predators.
