The Collapse

Eddie Pepitone

Veeps · 2025 · 52 min

An hour of high-decibel ranting about aging and social collapse.

Eddie Pepitone’s stage presence has always suggested a man who is one minor inconvenience away from a total psychological break. He screams because the world is falling apart, but his loudest shouts are reserved for the everyday indignities of aging and self-doubt. The central metaphor of his 2025 hour is a waking nightmare where his own self-loathing is physically attached to his face like the facehugger from Alien, actively mocking him as he tries to order a cup of coffee.

Recorded at Lincoln Hall in Chicago and directed by Steven Feinartz, the hour showcases the veteran comic’s ability to pivot from apocalyptic fury to theatrical vulnerability. Pepitone targets everything from the moral compromises of modernity, like the likelihood that someone suffered to manufacture his Apple Watch, to the desperate quest for social media validation. Executive produced by Patton Oswalt, the special presents Pepitone as a loud contrarian who is fully aware that he was never built for mainstream late-night television.

The set list

6 bits
  1. Apple Watch and falling alerts

Rages against his Apple Watch checking if he has fallen, declaring his life a non-stop descent into hell rather than an isolated incident.

  2. Pacing on the stage rug

Explains how pacing on rugs feeds his domestic anxiety and mocks rug salespeople who sell long-lasting rugs to comfortable people.

  3. Preparation for the AI singularity

Reacts to fears of smart technology by aggressively subordinating his household appliances into performing absurd subservient acts.

  4. Self-loathing facehugger and ordering coffee

Describes his self-loathing attaching to his face like the creature in Alien and berating his choices while ordering a latte at a coffee shop.

  5. Optometrists and progressive glasses

Rants against optometrists upselling anti-glare coatings and progressive lenses that make nighttime driving against LED headlights terrifying.

  6. Heckling himself from the audience

Steps down into the crowd to heckle himself, parodying comic meta-moments by exploiting his own insecurities.
