The Comedy Show Show

Eugene Mirman

Comedy Dynamics · 2016

Eugene Mirman pauses comic storytellers on stage to demand trivial details.

The premise functions like an onstage filibuster of personal narrative: stand-up comics step up to tell a story, only for their host to hit pause and cross-examine whatever convenient assumptions they made along the way. Sitting just off to the side, Mirman acts as an affable prosecutor, stopping Janeane Garofalo, Andy Kindler, Greg Behrendt, and Phoebe Robinson whenever an odd factual leap or casual aside needs an immediate audit. Released in 2016 on NBC’s short-lived streaming platform Seeso, the showcase adopted the live format of his Audible series Hold On. At the time, Mirman was five seasons deep into voicing Gene Belcher on Bob’s Burgers and coming off his nine-volume Sub Pop audio experiment. The show works best when the performers push back against the constant interruptions, turning comfortable routines into awkward, funny negotiations over minor facts.
