Released in 1995 as an audio-only album, Funk It! captures Martin Lawrence at the absolute peak of his cultural dominance. His eponymous sitcom had just won an NAACP Image Award, giving Lawrence the freedom to use his stand-up as a pressure valve. Away from network television constraints, he leans into the aggressive, confrontational style that made him a star on Def Comedy Jam. The 59-minute set targets specific mid-90s cultural flashpoints. He spends over twelve minutes talking about Lorena Bobbitt, alongside extended routines about airline travel and the emerging novelty of cellular phones.

Produced by Lawrence and Kenny Buford, the release earned a 1996 Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Comedy Album. Tracks like “Wash Yo’ Ass” and “Jesus’ Chicken” maintain a decidedly blue tone, keeping the energy high without the pacing requirements of a television broadcast.
