Rather than trying to make grand statements about the cultural moment, Adam Newman builds his debut hour around a series of highly specific, wonderfully absurd obsessions. He spends significant time examining the dark underbelly of The Jetsons, pitching erotic fan fiction about President William Howard Taft, and recounting his missed chance to cameo in the low-budget Canadian horror-comedy WolfCop. The tone is silly and lighthearted, driven by a comic who seems genuinely delighted by the trivial things that occupy his mind. Filmed at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia, where Newman previously worked as a security guard, the 2017 special was originally released on Seeso, NBC’s short-lived, comedy-focused streaming service. When Seeso folded later that year, the hour spent some time on Amazon Prime before eventually finding a home on YouTube. At this point in his career, Newman was a regular presence on Comedy Central, having completed a half-hour special and multiple appearances on the late-night game show @midnight. He closes the set with a highly literal stunt: an attempt to set a world record for the highest mic drop ever recorded.
