We'll Do It For Half

George Lopez

Netflix · 2020 · 51 min

An aging skeptic defends old-school parenting and Latino culture.

George Lopez leans heavily on generational resentment and cultural pride to make sense of a changing America. The special gets its title from a controversial joke Lopez made online about an Iranian bounty on Donald Trump, setting a combative tone for an hour that contrasts his own strict, old-school upbringing with modern parenting and social sensitivities. Rather than adapting to contemporary comedy trends, he leans into the persona of an aging skeptic who is baffled by emotional support animals, gender reveal parties, and children who talk back to their mothers.

The performance was recorded at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco in December 2019 and debuted on Netflix the following summer, representing the comic’s first original special for the streaming service. Lopez is at his most comfortable when celebrating Chicano culture and discussing immigration, though some of his edgier setups, such as comparing mass shooters to domestic terrorists, often devolve into lengthy tangents about his own childhood.

Reviews were mixed, pointing out that many of the jokes rely on predictable stereotypes and outdated attitudes rather than fresh material. Despite the critical shrug, the set found an audience among fans who appreciate his refusal to soften his delivery.

The set list

5 bits
  1. Chastising the federal government for deporting Latino military veterans.

Proposes letting families decide who among them should get booted out of the United States instead.

  2. Purchasing Life Alert emergency devices for elderly relatives.

Examines what it means for society to buy them, executed with an act-out impersonating a Life Alert phone operator.

  3. Trump's proposed border wall.

Jokes about the wall being built by and for Mexicans, reflecting on the feasibility and politics behind it.

  4. White women calling the police on Black people at Starbucks.

Contrasts domestic terrorism and racial double standards with the reality that Black and Latino Americans are not enemies of the state.

  5. Scandals involving female teachers having sexual relationships with underage male students.
