Good Timing with Jo Firestone

Jo Firestone

Peacock · 2021 · 49 min

Jo Firestone teaches stand-up comedy to New York senior citizens.

Jo Firestone does not tell many jokes in her 2021 special, but she manages to construct one of the most uniquely charming hours of comedy in recent memory by handing the stage over to senior citizens. The special documents a stand-up workshop Firestone taught at New York City’s Greenwich House Senior Center, first on Zoom during the pandemic and later in person, culminating in a live showcase. Rather than a standard set of observational routines, the show thrives on the sheer eccentricity of its student body, who range from a woman who once sold jokes to Joan Rivers to a man whose prep work is supervised by his pet bird. In the classroom, Firestone leads them through warm-up exercises, such as debating whether the word ‘peanuts’ is inherently funny, while preparing a cast of unfiltered septuagenarians and octogenarians to face a live audience.

Filmed at the Greenwich House Theater in New York, the project caught Firestone at a busy but transitional point in her career. Having written for The Tonight Show and played a doomsday prepper on Joe Pera Talks With You, she used her pandemic downtime to experiment with the stand-up special format. The result is a hybrid of a documentary and a recital, where the humor comes from the class’s refusal to follow conventional joke-writing rules. While one student suggests ‘cream cheese’ is the worst thing you could print on a T-shirt, another immediately raises the stakes by suggesting ‘a naked baby’. The special earned critical acclaim and a Critics Choice Award nomination for its generous, oddball spirit, highlighting performers like Helaine Witt, Zygy Susser, and Nicki Cochrane as they finally step in front of the microphone.
