HBO Comedy Half-Hour

Dave Chappelle

HBO · 1998 · 28 min

An early television set from a comedian approaching mainstream fame.

A very young Dave Chappelle takes the stage looking like a college student, smoking relentlessly and working through early iterations of the commentary that would define his later career. The pacing is loose. He leans on act-outs and observational premises about strip clubs, getting robbed in New York, and the pervasive nature of drug culture. It is clearly the work of someone figuring out how to build a larger narrative, relying heavily on natural charisma to sell standard 1990s stand-up tropes.

Filmed at Broadway Studios in San Francisco in 1997 and released the following year, this half-hour set captures the comic right on the cusp of mainstream fame. He had just co-written and starred in Half Baked and was picking up supporting roles in major studio films. Decades later in his special The Dreamer, he claimed the last ten minutes of this recording were ruined by loud music bleeding in from the nightclub downstairs, though the disruption is completely unnoticeable on tape.
