What’s in a Name?

What is presented as a Netflix special is actually a 40-minute acceptance speech turned defensive victory lap. Recorded in June 2022 at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., the film captures Dave Chappelle returning to his alma mater to address a naming ceremony that almost didn’t happen. Following the fallout of his 2021 special “The Closer,” current students at the performing arts high school protested the plan to name their theater after him. Rather than backing down, Chappelle took the stage to decline the naming rights entirely, christening the room the Theater for Artistic Freedom and Expression instead.

Most of the runtime is dedicated to Chappelle lecturing the student body on the boundaries of art while offering a glimpse into his own origin story. He talks about transferring to the school in 1987 as a shy kid during the height of the crack epidemic, learning to defend himself against roasts during the “Barbershop Massacre” on 15th Street, and discovering his voice. His argument centers on the idea that art requires the freedom to offend, using a metaphor about a cartoon rabbit shooting a man to distinguish performance from real-world harm. While the audience in the room gives him a standing ovation, the release functions less as a stand-up set and more as an extended, self-justifying footnote to his ongoing cultural battles.
