Suzanne Westenhoefer broke into comedy on a dare, carving out a lane by delivering gay material to straight crowds at mainstream clubs. Taking the stage in pristine 1990s blazer-chic, she used a disarming, hyper-femme aesthetic to get audiences on board before hitting them with casual, observational storytelling. It was a Trojan horse approach to stand-up.

Aired in July 1994 as part of the first season of HBO Comedy Half-Hour, the 28-minute set made television history. Premiering the same night as Bob Smith’s half-hour, the two broadcasts marked HBO’s first stand-up specials headlined by openly gay performers. Westenhoefer picked up a CableACE Award nomination for the performance, cementing a conversational, off-the-cuff style that would sustain a long touring career.
