Cody Hughes manages to turn the excruciating social awkwardness of repeating a failed joke about dog food into an oddly comforting set of stand-up. Filmed at Catawba Brewing in his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, the performance leans into a specific brand of hyper-verbal, self-deprecating millennial anxiety. He is sober now, but that mostly means he has redirected his obsessive tendencies toward over-analyzing NyQuil color schemes and explaining why psychedelic mushroom enthusiasts are the most exhausting people on earth. Hughes started stand-up at seventeen after winning a contest purely to spite his sister, which landed him an opening slot for Lewis Black. By the time he taped this debut in 2023, he had developed a highly conversational, slightly neurotic style built around low-stakes daily friction. He defends Tootsie Rolls as a candy with a flavor your tongue has to squint at, and laments the social hazards of grocery store flirting. The resulting set, produced by Four by Three and Modelface Comedy, captures a local favorite performing in a brewery space that suits his low-key energy.
