Here's Your Sign
Warner Bros. Nashville · Album · 1996 · 53 min
A foundational 1996 comedy album about everyday stupidity and obvious questions.
Bill Engvall stakes his entire career on a single premise: stupid people should have to wear warning signs. It is a deceptively simple observation that spawned a cottage industry, anchoring his debut comedy album and establishing the template for his conversational Southern stand-up. Engvall builds out the framework by presenting scenarios where people ask painfully obvious questions, responding with deadpan sarcasm and handing them a metaphorical placard. Beyond the title track, he works through familiar suburban frustrations, tackling golf etiquette, childhood discipline, and trips to the county fair.
Recorded at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan, the 53-minute release put the comic on the map. The 1996 album arrived as his contemporary Jeff Foxworthy was finding massive success with his own catchphrase-driven routines, and Engvall struck a similar chord. The record went platinum, charted on the Billboard 200, and spawned a musical adaptation featuring country singer Travis Tritt. The release cemented Engvall’s transition from a working club comic to a cornerstone of the looming Blue Collar Comedy boom.
