Maggie Faris makes comedy out of a cheerful silliness blended with a mild but persistent cynicism about the absurdity of everyday adulthood. On her 2015 debut comedy album “Hot Lesbo Action,” released by Minneapolis-based independent label Stand Up! Records, she pairs self-deprecating anecdotes with rapid-fire one-liners, establishing herself as a highly distinct voice in the Twin Cities scene. The 41-minute set highlights Faris’s relaxed stage presence, with notable bits detailing a disastrous stint with a temp agency where she was hired to drive a truck towing a giant building through New York City, resulting in six collisions before she simply abandoned the vehicle. Faris also leans into her perspective as a lesbian, offering playful commentary on bad tattoos, dating, and describing male anatomy in ways that only reinforce her lack of interest in it. Prior to the album’s release, Faris was already a seasoned live act, having won the Aspen Comedy Festival’s Silver Nail Award. She uses that stage confidence here to keep the energy light and conversational.
