Live at the Duke of York's Theatre
PolyGram Video · 1992 · 60 min
Jack Dee brings his suited, scowling deadpan to the West End.
Before nineties television turned grumpiness into standard British broadcasting fare, Jack Dee treated misery as an exact science. He paces the boards in a dark suit, refusing to crack a smile, treating every modern convenience as an insult engineered specifically to waste his time.
Recorded at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre and released direct to VHS in 1992, the set caught Dee right after his Best Stage Newcomer win at the British Comedy Awards and just as his Channel 4 show was taking off. Video sleeves saddled him with the tagline ‘the bulldog on Valium,’ a clumsy piece of marketing shorthand for what was actually disciplined deadpan restraint.
The set focuses heavily on mundane domestic nuisances: the ordeal of shopping at catalogue stores, hand-knitted sweaters, craft fairs, and the quiet despair of trying to bleed a radiator. When a joke pushes into genuinely bleak territory, he listens to the audience gasp, remarks on the sudden chill in the room, and continues without apologizing.
