At Large
Netflix · 2017
An energetic, self-deprecating arena show about upper-class humiliation.
Jack Whitehall’s high-energy stage presence relies heavily on leaning into his own upper-class absurdity, a persona he polishes to a high sheen in his first Netflix stand-up special. Filmed at the Hammersmith Apollo in London during his massive UK arena tour, the show finds Whitehall at a career high point, fresh off his sitcom successes and just beginning his transition into mainstream Hollywood acting. He leans on physical comedy and a fast, theatrical delivery to sell a set focused entirely on self-deprecation and posh embarrassment.
The material relies on his familiar routine of being a coddled, bumbling Englishman out of his depth. Specific bits include a detailed account of trying to buy weed in Amsterdam with friends named Digby and Rupert, an awkward flight where he slept with his eyes open next to a stranger, and a school-era grudge against classmate Robert Pattinson, who always beat him out for the lead roles in school plays. He also recounts a highly inappropriate stay at a California Disneyland hotel and a disastrous encounter with Prince Harry. His father, Michael Whitehall, makes his customary appearance in the audience, looking appropriately unimpressed by his son’s theatrical antics, which culminate in a ridiculous, over-the-top costume finale.
