The Half Hour
Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min
Tight club jokes about panic attacks, yoga, and quiet embarrassment.
Most comics talking about anxiety perform a loud theatrical panic, but Joe List presents his neuroses as quiet, humiliating clerical errors. He explains the practical failure of trying to meditate, concluding that drifting off into a daytime nap accomplishes the exact same thing without the spiritual pretension.
Taped in June 2015 at the Royale Theatre in Boston, the set arrived during a breakout stretch that saw List reach the finals of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and build an underground following through his podcast Tuesdays with Stories. Returning to his home state for a Comedy Central broadcast gave the performance a fast, economical rhythm honed on East Coast club bills.
The material runs through yoga room dread, questionable babysitting from an eccentric uncle, and the undignified mechanics of dating. He keeps the setups brief and the punchlines self-directed, treating his own discomfort as the baseline condition rather than an obstacle.
