The Half Hour

Joe Machi

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Nervous deadpan and odd angles taped in New Orleans.

Joe Machi walks onstage looking like someone forced him into the spotlight against his will. His voice is pitched high, his shoulders stay locked, and his eyes dart across the room as if hunting for an exit. The nervous twitching is pure misdirection. Underneath the apparent panic is an exacting writer whose punchlines hit with dry, unsentimental spite.

He questions why the world’s richest billionaires ask normal people to donate to their charities, and he imagines medical visits two hundred years ago when a physician’s only trick was bleeding the patient to death. Later, he picks apart Tom Brady’s Deflategate press conference, irritated that an elite athlete could not even be bothered to construct a sensible lie.

The set was filmed at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans and aired on Comedy Central in September 2016. Machi arrived with momentum from the New York club circuit and a fourth-place run on season eight of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, having built his reputation on sets that traded entirely on tight mechanics rather than glad-handing charm.
