One Night Stand
HBO · 1992 · 30 min
Cynical, deadpan club comedy from a future Seinfeld and Curb writer.
Jon Hayman built his stand-up around a gravelly, irritated weariness that refused to pretend anything about everyday life was going smoothly. He holds the stage with the posture of an annoyed neighbor explaining why everyone else is doing things wrong, tossing off punchlines with flat, dry certainty rather than courting the room for approval.
Taped in Miami Beach, Florida, and broadcast in November 1992, the half-hour caught Hayman right as his work behind the scenes began eclipsing his time on the club circuit. Fresh off hosting Comedy Central’s sports parody Sports Monster, he was already working as a program consultant on season four of Seinfeld—the same autumn viewers first heard his raspy voice arguing over trivial pursuit cards as the off-screen Bubble Boy.
