A television cut from the 1995 Just for Laughs festival plays as a cross-section of mid-90s stand-up styles. The broadcast offers polished American club comedy, aggressive British lad culture, and rambling theatrical surrealism back to back. It is a fascinating collision of personas from three working professionals at crucial career pivot points.\n\nFrank Skinner handles the hosting duties at the St. Denis Theatre in Montreal. He leans into the coarse, taboo-pushing energy that had recently turned Fantasy Football League into a massive UK hit. His introduction for Eddie Izzard famously fell flat in the room, creating an awkward tension that Izzard immediately diffuses. Stepping out in full makeup, Izzard works through early versions of material that would soon anchor the Definite Article tour. He does an impression of the inner voices of a human appendix plotting to explode, then mocks Isaac Newton for claiming he was clever just because he noticed an apple falling. Richard Jeni rounds out the lineup with airtight observational routines. Fresh off a supporting role in The Mask and the launch of his own UPN sitcom Platypus Man, Jeni delivers high-energy material about airline travel, late-night infomercials, and his family dynamics.
