I Didn't F**k It Up
Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2016
Satirical folk songs about partisan media, parenting stress, and aging.
The central joke of the title track sets the tone for the entire set: an earnest acoustic ballad built around the cheerful refusal to take the blame for the mess of the modern world. Katie Goodman sings sweet harmonies with theatrical polish, only to puncture them with sudden profanity and domestic irritation. Goodman, who spent years co-directing and touring with the feminist satire troupe Broad Comedy alongside collaborator Soren Kisiel, compiled these tracks into an audio album for Comedy Dynamics in 2016. Early-2010s political references date songs like ‘Glenn Beck Is Batshit Crazy’ and ‘I Drunk Dialed Obama,’ but the material holds up much better when the focus turns inward. Numbers such as ‘Baby You Forty’ and ‘Things I Can’t Fucking Remember’ capture middle-aged domestic friction and memory loss with unvarnished irritation, while tracks like ‘Soccer Mom Ho’ and ‘Saving My Hymen for Jesus’ rely on precise vocal arrangements. When she toured the material at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, critics noted that the political songs leaned heavily on easy applause from sympathetic rooms, but Goodman’s musical discipline keeps the cabaret numbers moving without getting bogged down in gimmickry.
