Poundcake

Keith Stubbs

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 33 min

A Utah comedy kingpin takes on three-hour church services.

Keith Stubbs built his best-known routine around a frustration specific to Utah: Sunday church services lasted three full hours, and nobody needed that much organized worship. Rather than taking aggressive swings, he approached the ritual like an endurance sport, pitching an early case for remote attendance years before anyone streamed services from home.

Filmed in Provo for Dry Bar Comedy, the thirty-minute set captured Stubbs on familiar territory. By 2017, he had spent over a decade running the Wiseguys comedy club chain and hosting morning radio in Salt Lake City, which gave his stage presence the easy authority of a host who owns the room.

He works clean, adopting the moniker Poundcake as an improbable suburban gangster persona. The rest of the half-hour runs through the petty indignities of airport security, driving an unassuming Ford Fiesta, and coaching youth football.
