Songs in the Key of Kristin

Kristin Key

800 Pound Gorilla · Album · 2017

Fifteen short acoustic comedy tunes about introversion and everyday annoyances.

Fairy tales make considerably more sense once you accept that Cinderella did not lose a glass slipper because of magic; she lost it because drunk people lose their shoes. Kristin Key built years of road work out of folding acoustic guitar tracks between stand-up bits, but Songs in the Key of Kristin cuts the spoken set away entirely to deliver a studio-recorded music album.

Released in June 2017 through 800 Pound Gorilla Records, the album dropped during a prolific stretch alongside her fourth stand-up record, I’m a Hooker. A West Texas preacher’s daughter who first reached national audiences as a finalist on Last Comic Standing, Key uses the studio setting to keep her melodies tight and the punchlines unhurried by club crosstalk.

The tracks fixate on mundane human dread and domestic pettiness. “Poop at Work” treats corporate bathroom visits like tactical espionage, while “Road Trip” calculates exactly how many hours two friends can share a car before murder becomes a talking point. Antagonistic introversion anchors numbers like “Knock Knock Go Away” and “Wishing I Was Asleep,” balanced by revised folklore like “Snow White (Death by Fruit),” which treats the story like an unsolved homicide involving poisoned produce and an opportunistic stranger.

Tracks rarely exceed three minutes, so each premise runs its course before wearing thin.
