Lee Su-geun is a titan of Korean variety television, famous for his rapid ad-libs on massive ensemble shows like Knowing Bros and New Journey to the West. For his first foray into stand-up comedy, he strips away the chaotic games and the large cast, stepping onto a quiet stage to talk about the one skill that kept him alive in showbiz: nunchi, the Korean art of reading the room.
The transition from ensemble variety television to a solo microphone is rarely seamless, and this 45-minute special shows the friction of that change. Filmed in Seoul during the summer of 2021, the production had to adapt to severe pandemic restrictions. Instead of a packed theater, Lee performs for a socially distanced crowd of only twenty people. Without a roaring crowd to feed his energy, Lee struggles early on with pacing. The special’s director, Kim Joo-hyung, later admitted they had to pause the recording because the seasoned comic was talking so fast from nerves he needed to stop and drink some water.
Once he settles in, the show shifts from a standard stand-up set into something resembling an informal advice session. Lee dispenses life tips to audience members who worry too much about what others think of them, telling stories from his own life to show how hyper-awareness can be both a survival tool and a burden. He shares personal anecdotes about his childhood, his marriage, and his relationship with imposing industry seniors like Kang Ho-dong. He demystifies Kang’s intimidating reputation, pointing out that the man nicknamed the Siberian Tiger has never even been to Siberia and is actually a worrywart who spends his time reading everyone else’s cues.
Though Netflix pitched the special as a major entry for Korean stand-up on the global stage, local critics and audiences found the format awkward. The lack of an established local stand-up club scene meant the material felt more like a pleasant conversation than a structured hour of comedy.
