The back-story of the recording is half the appeal. While spending months opening for John Mulaney on his “From Scratch” arena tour, Smith asked Mulaney if he could officially tape his opening set at Madison Square Garden for a special. When Mulaney said no, Smith simply recorded it anyway. Captured in secret during a sold-out show at the famous New York arena in June 2022, the resulting 30-minute set was eventually released on YouTube in early 2023.

Despite the rogue production, the performance stands on its own.
