Before he became a fixture on panel shows and a sitcom star, Lee Mack was a fast-talking stand-up whose stage presence felt like a caffeine rush. His hyperactive energy on the Hammersmith Apollo stage is balanced by Jack Dee’s signature deadpan hosting. Mack brings a physical, old-school variety-show pacing to the performance, leaping into crowd work and rapid-fire routines that make the massive theater feel like a local club.

Recorded as the Series 2 premiere of the BBC showcase (then titled Jack Dee Live at the Apollo), the show features Mack at a transition point in his career. He had recently wrapped up The Sketch Show and was a year away from launching his long-running sitcom Not Going Out. His set includes a memorable routine about his desperate struggle to pass a driving test, a bit about moving to London from Southport, and an extended segment where he confiscates a front-row audience member’s glasses. True to the early format of the show, Dee handles the hosting duties with his usual gloomy crowd interaction, poking fun at the celebrity-packed audience that included Melanie C and the cast of Footballers’ Wives.
