A mid-2000s time capsule of British television stand-up, this episode features host Jack Dee steering two distinct styles of political and social commentary. Marcus Brigstocke brings his signature animated exasperation, most memorable here for an extended metaphor comparing Greece’s entry into the European Union to a drunk teenager sneaking past nightclub bouncers. Rich Hall counterbalances this with a slow-burned American cynicism, explaining why his home country will never surrender its firearms and breaking down the repetitive, highly predictable formula of every Tom Cruise movie ever made.

Filmed at the Hammersmith Apollo in West London, this was the fifth episode of the show’s second series in October 2005. At this point, the program relied on Dee’s deadpan stage presence to establish the atmosphere before he introduced the guest acts. Dee opens the night by leaning into his trademark misery, taking aim at a live audience that on this particular evening included disgraced former politician Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine.
