Lee Evans treats observational comedy like a decathlon. The appeal is the manic, sweat-drenched commitment he brings to acting out his premises. He stretches his face and throws his body around the stage to recreate mundane human behaviors, turning minor inconveniences into frantic physical theater.
Filmed at the Edinburgh Playhouse at the tail end of a 100-date tour, the 1998 set captures the comic right as he was crossing over into Hollywood character work with MouseHunt and There’s Something About Mary. The material centers on everyday frustrations, peaking with a routine about the mechanics of running in flip-flops. He breaks up the stand-up by closing the show as the “Lee Evans Trio,” playing multiple instruments simultaneously, and performing his original comic song “6ft Underground”.
