The Half Hour

Martha Kelly

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Flat-toned observations on office work, cross-country pet moves, and sobriety.

Most stand-up relies on building momentum, but Martha Kelly treats urgency as an unnecessary chore. Standing nearly motionless and speaking in a flat, unhurried cadence that barely rises above a library whisper, she outlines an idea for a motivational seminar whose core philosophy is simply that it is never too early to go back to bed.

Taped in June 2016 at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans, the performance aired midway through a sudden turn in Kelly’s career. After more than twenty years working clubs in Los Angeles and Austin, Zach Galifianakis cast her as Martha Brooks on FX’s Baskets earlier that January. The series turned her signature deadpan into an indie-television staple, but this twenty-minute set shows where that rhythm originated.

Her material draws on domestic absurdities and personal discipline, delivered without a single shift in vocal inflection. She discusses getting sober, the logistical nightmare of driving across the country with four cats and a dog trapped in the backseat, preparing for the indignities of an office job, and reading a letter written from the perspective of her late cat.
