Happy & Glorious
Universal Pictures · 2015 · 1 h 30 min
Arena-sized physical comedy about bed-sharing, swimming pools, and country living.
Observational arena comedy relies on turning petty domestic friction into recognition for thousands of people at once, and McIntyre commits to it by sprinting across the stage to mimic the eerie shrieks of country foxes in pitch darkness. His material zeroes in on suburban irritations: waiters who refuse to write down food orders, the nightly jostling of sharing a bed, and the British routine of standing shivering by a holiday pool while insisting the water is fine once inside.
Filmed during his 2015 residency at London’s O2 Arena, the show caught McIntyre at the height of his commercial dominance. By this tour, he had played the venue twenty-seven times.
Between bits about car clocks left unadjusted after daylight saving and soothing young children with iPads, the performance leans heavily into physical comedy. A sequence about his toe-first walking posture and corrective orthotic shoes turns podiatry into an excuse for varied awkward walks across the eighty-foot stage.
Contemporary reviews found the show uneven, noting that well-worn topics like names on coffee cups felt tired next to his livelier personal anecdotes.
