Ms. Pat

800 Pound Gorilla · Album · 2017

An audio debut contrasting street survival in Atlanta with suburban motherhood.

Most comics treat near-fatal trauma as a solemn third-act confession. Ms. Pat mentions getting shot in the head and run over by a dump truck with the casual rhythm someone else might use to complain about traffic.

The foundation of the set is a split household. She separates her children into two distinct categories: the older “Medicaid kids” born during her teenage years in Atlanta who understand real deprivation, and the younger “Blue Cross/Blue Shield kids” raised in middle-class Indiana. In her telling, having health insurance just made the younger ones soft, entitled, and useless in an emergency.

Released by 800 Pound Gorilla Records in late 2017, the 48-minute audio album arrived alongside her memoir of the same name. She had spent years working the material through Midwestern clubs after leaving Georgia, gradually converting a childhood of bootleg houses and street hustle into straightforward club comedy.

Routine bits about mammograms, weight loss, and marriage sit right alongside recollections of running drugs as a minor, delivered without an ounce of self-pity.
