The Half Hour

Nate Fernald

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Deadpan absurdity and miniature sketches delivered with quiet panic.

Nate Fernald constructs jokes with the nervous cadence of someone reading an apology he expects the room to reject. Setups that begin like ordinary self-deprecation veer quickly into surreal dead ends: getting arrested because he rode a bicycle without a helmet into a bank with a gun, or worrying that a toilet snake will emerge and transform into a group of women mocking his body.

Taped at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans for the fifth season of Comedy Central’s showcase series, the set caught Fernald while he was working in Los Angeles as a writer for The Late Late Show with James Corden. That background shows up in the tight construction and rapid structural resets. He burns through conceptual sketches in a matter of seconds, including a neat freak at a strip club urging performers to fold their clothes and an inventor wondering what Fruit Roll-Ups would taste like with hair on them.

Later in the set, he administers a moral pop quiz to check if the audience is ethical enough to perform for, using the query to transition straight into a complaint about karaoke and a scenario about being a fly seeking out loose flies.
