The Whiteness Album

Nato Green

Self-released · Album · 2018 · 50 min

A San Francisco union organizer calls a meeting for white liberals.

Nato Green approaches stand-up like the labor union negotiator he actually is, unwilling to let comfortable liberals off the hook for systems they quietly benefit from. He frames post-2016 panic as an indictment of people who only started paying attention when national politics personally annoyed them. Rather than reciting cable news monologues, he takes the stage like an exasperated spokesperson running a mandatory staff meeting, pushing through routines about tech wealth pricing out historic San Francisco neighborhoods and why nobody actually moves to the United States just to clean toilets.

Recorded at Doc’s Lab in San Francisco in November 2017 and released in January 2018 by Blonde Medicine, the album captured Green right before an unusual pause. He recorded the set as an intentional milestone before temporarily moving his family to Cuba while his wife conducted field research in medical anthropology. That same year, he appeared in Boots Riley’s film Sorry to Bother You.

The material focuses on class conflict and displacement without turning into an academic lecture. Routines like “Techies Behaving Badly” and “There’s Gentrification Afoot” work because Green understands leverage from decades at the bargaining table.

Bullseye with Jesse Thorn on NPR named it one of the best comedy albums of 2018.
