Chris Rock prowls the stage with the confidence of a performer who knows he is completely untouchable, delivering punchlines with a rhythmic, staccato bark that feels more like an indictment of modern culture than a typical comedy set. He addresses the exhaustion of defending modern rap music, specifically the demanding work of explaining Lil Jon lyrics to outsiders, and tears into the legal and public relations disasters of Michael Jackson and Kobe Bryant. Recorded live at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., in March 2004, the audio release of this material hit shelves in February 2005. That year marked a massive pop-cultural peak for Rock; in the span of a few months, he hosted the 77th Academy Awards, debuted his hit autobiographical sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, and starred in Madagascar. This 75-minute audio release captures his stage show in a format that isolates his sharp timing and the musicality of his delivery. In addition to live tracks like Drugs, Donuts and Wealth and Affirmative Action, the album inserts studio-produced parodies like Thug Radio and the recurring Tip Your Hat to Whitey segments. The record went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album at the 48th annual ceremony.
