The Half Hour

Noah Gardenswartz

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Low-key stand-up covering psychedelics, gambling, and teaching elementary school.

Noah Gardenswartz works in a calm, matter-of-fact register that makes questionable habits sound like sensible life choices. He treats vice with breezy practicality, discussing drugs and casino gambling as ordinary weekend hobbies rather than cries for help. There is no frantic pacing or manufactured outrage; he talks with the measured cadence of an ex-schoolteacher who took notes on everything odd he encountered and kept moving.

Taped at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans and broadcast in August 2016 during the fifth season of Comedy Central’s showcase series, the set coincided with the release of his debut album, Blunt. Gardenswartz had recently reached the semifinals of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and was a year away from joining the writing staff of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

He picks apart small cultural anomalies with a straight face, discussing the lack of Black representation on blunt wrap packaging, questioning why movies cast Charlton Heston as Moses, and recalling a conversation with an unsettlingly wise child while tripping on acid.
