Outside The Box

Norman Lovett

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 68 min

A veteran alternative comic quietly rummages through loose household clutter.

Most comics pace around trying to project relentless energy. Norman Lovett walks out, pulls a folding chair into place, and begins unburdening himself of loose items he has acquired, including a pooper scooper he decides to model as a hat. He does not rush to explain any of it. The pacing is slow enough that pauses stretch out until the audience has to decide whether he has wandered off track or is simply waiting for them to catch up.

The material is so stripped down it barely resembles a conventional club set. Lovett produces mundane items from a bag, flips through pictures of television newsreaders, and remarks on petty daily irritations with the mild bewilderment of someone trying to make sense of society. His delivery influenced a generation of British alternative comics, particularly Stewart Lee, who borrowed Lovett’s repetition and stubborn refusal to hustle for applause.

Filmed at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff by indie comedy label Go Faster Stripe in September 2011, the hour arrived right after an Edinburgh Fringe run. Lovett, widely recognized as Holly from Red Dwarf, had spent decades on the UK circuit perfecting an approach that Chortle described as an elderly gentleman faffing about with things kept in a bag. Comedy Dynamics later distributed the performance for digital streaming in 2018.

It works because Lovett never winks at the absurdity. Whether handling a single screw taken from a backstage dressing room or wafting a plastic trash bag through the air, he treats the rubbish with straight-faced dignity.
