Bill Maher in 1992 is a comedian on the verge of a format change. Before he spent three decades sitting behind a desk mediating panels of politicians and actors, he was a guy with a microphone and a smirk. This half-hour set captures the base elements of the persona that would secure his late-night empire. The contrarian streak, the political skepticism, and the evident self-satisfaction are all fully formed. It offers a look at a working club comic leaning into topical material right before he stopped standing up.

Filmed in Miami Beach, Florida, this set aired in July 1992 as the season four premiere of HBO’s One Night Stand anthology series. Maher was a veteran of the circuit who made appearances on Johnny Carson’s program, and he had recently started co-hosting election coverage for Comedy Central. The following year, he would launch Politically Incorrect, making this television appearance a final snapshot of his career as a solitary stage act before becoming a permanent fixture of panel formats.
