Paul Chowdhry

Universal Pictures · 2015 · 75 min

Combative stand-up and blunt crowd work at the Hammersmith Apollo.

Paul Chowdhry treats stand-up like an impending fistfight with the front row. He paces the edge of the stage, interrogates late arrivals, and picks apart intra-Asian cultural divides with zero interest in polite conversation. The jokes that work best hinge on domestic friction: the suffocating etiquette of Indian hospitality, or how a Punjabi father reacts compared to an English father when an adolescent son asks to host a sleepover.

Filmed during a three-night stand at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in September 2015, the hour caught Chowdhry at a commercial peak. He had taken over hosting duties on Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week, but his core appeal bypassed television gatekeepers entirely, filling major venues through word of mouth among British-Asian audiences.

Critics in the broadsheets panned the show for relying on broad ethnic accents and cheap shock tactics. Chowdhry was largely indifferent to the reviews, leaning instead into aggressive audience banter and quick insults, at one point shutting down a loud heckler by claiming to have slept with the man’s mother.
