The Half Hour
Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min
Deadpan club comedy built on dry dating jokes and misdirection.
Phil Hanley delivers punchlines with the calm cadence of someone sharing bad news he made peace with months ago. When a date warns him there will be no funny business, he figures that is fine because he does not need to run his act. When she clarifies that she is celibate and insists sex is not the end of the world, he points out it would be if the rest of humanity adopted her stance.
Filmed at the Royale in Boston during the summer of 2015, the broadcast caught the Canadian comedian settling into New York after years of grinding club sets. Before short-form video popularized his crowd work, Hanley relied primarily on structured joke economy and deadpan misdirection.
Most of the material hinges on deflating himself without groveling. He punctures the supposed joys of bachelorhood, noting that while people say you can sleep with anyone you want, you can actually only sleep with anyone who wants to sleep with you. Other jokes examine moving back in with his parents as an adult and an ex-girlfriend whose twin happened to be a brother.
