Full Grown Man

Phil Kopczinski

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 39 min

An animated half-hour on the quiet indignities of middle age.

The best stretch comes when Kopczynski leans into physical humiliation, like blowing out a knee during a casual game of pickup basketball or freezing in a weight room after watching a teenage girl easily out-squat him. He works the stage with the exasperated energy of someone who expected adulthood to bring dignity, only to discover it mostly delivers sudden joint pain and thrift-store confusion.

Taped at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, the twenty-three-minute set caught the eastern Washington comic as he was leaving behind a decade in corporate America for full-time touring. The venue’s clean-comedy policy forced him to set aside his rougher club material in favor of domestic routines about used underwear, unsalted sunflower seeds, and aging out of athletic relevance.

Dry Bar misspelled his last name on the release graphics as Kopczinski, though the error did little to hurt the clips online, where excerpts from the performance gathered millions of views.
