Rather than chasing the high-glitz production of a major premium network, Lil Rel Howery went back to his Chicago roots to anchor his self-produced What’s Funny Comedy Festival. Co-directed by Howery and filmmaker Sanicole, the set trades theatrical staging for a looser club atmosphere. He leans into the physical storytelling and vocal impressions that built his reputation before Hollywood called.
Filmed in 2024 and released as a Tubi original in September 2025, the hour finds Howery adapting to the realities of mid-career celebrity. He talks about the strange friction of being a recognizable actor who still has to deal with everyday family drama and the absurdities of aging. Released in the same year Howery starred in the indie comedy “Code 3,” the special serves as a reminder of his baseline appeal as a live performer.
