Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam — Season 1, Episode 8
Reynaldo Rey, Eddie Griffin, Fat Doctor and 1 more
HBO · 1992
Four rapid-fire comedy sets packed into a tight half-hour television showcase.
Eddie Griffin takes the stage at a cultural boiling point, tackling the early 1990s news cycle head-on. His set anchors the eighth episode of Def Comedy Jam’s first season, targeting the Rodney King beating, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jackson. It is a confrontational, loud closer from a comic finding his footing right before jumping into wider television and film roles.
Host Martin Lawrence keeps the room moving for a tight twenty-five minute HBO showcase.
The lineup features the comedy duo Arceneaux and Mitchell doing their “TV Addict” routine, along with Darcel Blagmon, performing under the name Fat Doctor. Stage and screen veteran Reynaldo Rey delivers a memorable middle set, pivoting from traditional stand-up into a rap segment titled “I’m Scared A U”.
