Chrysalis
Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015 · 50 min
Debut stand-up on youthful piety, bad tattoos, and post-divorce dating.
Before tramp stamps had a name, Sara Schaefer had already inked a butterfly onto her lower back to honor Jesus Christ. Two decades later, her proposed fix is tattooing quotation marks around it so the design reads as deliberate irony. That friction between earnest teenage piety and weary adult hindsight anchors the set, turning personal embarrassments into precise punchlines.\n\nRecorded in January 2015 at Union Hall in Brooklyn, Chrysalis marked Schaefer’s debut stand-up album after winning two Emmy awards for her work on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and co-hosting MTV’s Nikki & Sara Live. Moving from broadcast television to an intimate comedy basement allowed her to lean into longer, more personal territory.\n\nMuch of the material targets the daily indignities placed on women, picking apart fashion trends like underboob, crying in museum restrooms, and hearing absurdly graphic rap lyrics while walking down the street. Her stories about re-entering the dating pool following a divorce avoid cheap self-pity, treating bad one-night stands as mundane observational comedy rather than personal tragedy.\n\nComedy Dynamics released the album in March 2015, and NPR’s Bullseye later listed it among the year’s best stand-up releases.
