Keep It Light Live
2017 · 75 min
Petty grievances and surreal domestic logic from the Margate stage.
Sean Lock’s promise to keep the tone pleasant collapses under the weight of his own natural irritation. He takes ordinary domestic friction and bends it sideways until it resembles surreal paranoia. A routine about buying reading glasses turns into an argument against opticians forcing lime-green accents onto middle-aged men, while a complaint about cinema snack prices escalates into an elaborate jewellery heist.
Filmed in April 2017 at the Theatre Royal in Margate, the 76-minute set caught Lock during his long run as a team captain on Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Directed by John Gordillo and released on DVD that autumn, it was his fourth solo special and the last one recorded before his death in 2021.
Rather than building toward moral takeaways, Lock sticks to low-stakes absurdity and misanthropy. He dismisses the idea of James Bond saving the world as childish fantasy, argues through his newfound appreciation for televised ballet alongside his disdain for contemporary dance, and questions his own internet search history.
