She's Not From Around Here

Wendy Maybury’s debut comedy album, She’s Not From Around Here, offers a maternal reality check wrapped in a sweet Southern drawl. Maybury spent years as a professional photographer before finding her footing on the Twin Cities comedy scene, and her first record captures a comic who has fully aged out of caring what the PTA thinks.

Released by Stand Up! Records on June 26, 2020, and produced by Dan Schlissel, the album quickly hit the top spot on both the iTunes and Amazon comedy charts. Maybury, a self-described military brat born in Japan with deep family roots in Alabama, uses her pleasant, honey-dipped cadence to deliver jokes that are surprisingly graphic.

The set leans heavily on the bizarre realities of late-in-life motherhood and Southern family dynamics. During “Baby Makin’,” she recounts getting pregnant at 41 and undergoing genetic testing, joking about her family’s history of dwarfism. She tackles the odd politics of parenting, from breastfeeding judgment to the circumcision debate in “Penis Mullet.” The album closes with “The Vagina Song,” a bit about vaginal rejuvenation that later inspired an animated short by indie director Bill Plympton.
