Jamie Foxx steps onto the stage in a mini-flattop and an oversized suit, riding the momentum of his breakout run on In Living Color. His first hour for HBO operates as a showcase for a performer determined to prove he can do everything at once. He blends standard stand-up with extended chunks dedicated to his TV characters, most notably Ugly Wanda, and leans hard into celebrity impressions of Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, and Prince.
Filmed at San Diego’s Spreckels Theater in 1993, the broadcast opens with a dramatic two-minute intro featuring a stunt driver navigating foggy streets. Once in front of the crowd, Foxx keeps the energy high, occasionally demanding applause when a punchline doesn’t pull the exact reaction he wants. The performance eventually shifts gears entirely, abandoning comedy so Foxx can sing a medley of R&B tracks from his unreleased debut studio album, Peep This.
