Geoffrey Asmus bases his stage persona on a strange paradox: he acts like a supremely confident alpha male while freely admitting to bed-wetting, a lifetime of zero masturbation, and sharing personality traits with serial killers. This contrast fuels The Only Funny White Man, a self-released hour where his high-intellect, history-major background collides with aggressive Midwestern self-deprecation.
Filmed at Sisyphus Brewing in Minneapolis, Minnesota (with his parents sitting in the crowd), the 2023 special arrived during a career boom for Asmus. Having built an online following through short clips of combative crowd work and historical trivia, he used this performance to establish his credentials as a long-form writer. Rather than relying on simple audience riffs, the set features written routines on Midwestern religious billboard wars, the history of the Bible, and why liberals keep defeating themselves politically.
He spends plenty of time targeting his own crowd. He mocks local Lutherans, takes shots at his liberal audience’s snobbery toward blue-collar farm workers, and reads aloud a bizarre biblical passage detailing the exact punishment for a wife who grabs another man’s groin during a brawl. It is a highly specific, historically literate brand of arrogance.
