The Texas Chanoinesaw Massacre

Jay Chanoine

Stand Up! Records · Album · 2019 · 46 min

A New England punk comic brings his domestic cynicism to Texas.

Jay Chanoine builds his set on a proud sense of spite, leaning hard into his self-declared “hater” status to pick apart the absurdity of modern life. He positions himself as the undereducated foil to his highly educated spouse, playing the GED-holding “Beast” to her PhD-holding “Belle”. His style mixes a punk-rock edge with a surprisingly disciplined approach to narrative setup and payoff.

Recorded live at Kick Butt Coffee in Austin, Texas, the 2019 live album serves as Chanoine’s sophomore release and his first with Stand Up! Records. A veteran of the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour, Chanoine delivers a performance that leans into regional friction, famously pleading with his southern audience to bring a Dunkin’ Donuts to Austin. Other notable tracks include a critique of Yankee Candle scents and an awkward trip down memory lane with a roller rink story. Produced by Grammy winner Dan Schlissel, the album reached number one on the Amazon comedy charts and earned critical praise for standing out against more generic, biographical stand-up of its era.
